The Great Fire roared down from the High Country and swept across Mother Earth, leaving the prairie charred and barren. Tatanka (buffalo), life to the People, were no more. Riders from the Bear Claw village journeyed far from their hunting grounds in search of the sacred tatanka. On the fifth morning of their journey, Little Red Feather sat on his pony and gazed at mountains never before seen by a People. Snow capped peaks sparkled, appearing to give life. Are these the mountains that hide sun, he wondered as he looked upon this unfamiliar land? Sounds silent to the ear then came to him. The sounds were like the music from his grandmother's flute. He was hypnotized by the enchanting sounds. Then, a breeze blew across his face, lifting hair from his shoulders. Words followed. A friend waits, come. Mitakuye oyasin (we are all relatives). Come. Can this be, Little Red Feather questioned? Are there People in mountains that hide sun?
